Evaluation of Verio Onetouch Test Strips used with Verio Onetouch Reflect meters 10/16/2023

After conducting many tests (>1500) of both my own blood, and use of a test control fluid from Onetouch, here are my observations and analysis. All tests were conducted with test strips with at least 3 months remaining before their expiration date, using 5 different Vireo meters. All strips were stored in their Verio storage vial until a few seconds before use. The area of the strip near the blood channel was never touched when handling the test strip, or when inserting it into the meter, or when manipulating the strip in the meter to apply blood from the lance site. The blood channel was touched directly onto the blood spot to begin a test. Tests were conducted at all hours of the day and night, usually immediately before meals, at half hour intervals after meals until readings came down (about 2 hours), and several times during the evening and night, and late afternoon. Major findings in using the Verio Onetouch test strips:
        1) Repeatability with a given meter or between meters and different lots of test strips is better than +/- 4 mg/dL over 75% of the time, and within +/- 10 mg/dL 24% of the time.
        2) 1 out of every 100-200 tests gave a reading way above expectations, anywhere from 50 to 200 mg/dL too high, even though at stable and appropriate temperature conditions (See finding 8 below). Immediate retest resulted in a reasonably expected reading, and additional immediate retest in a repeatable reading.
        3) 1 out of 50 strips fail before adding blood. In one lot of 50 strips, I had 3-4 failed strips, with the meter identifying a strip or meter problem before adding blood. When removing and retrying such a strip, about 25% of the time the strip will work on a subsequent retry. This was usually done within a few minutes of the first reading attempt.
        4) It is easy to fail to wait after inserting a test strip and apply blood before the meter is ready, resulting in a ruined strip. You lance the finger, express a nice droplet, slip the strip into the meter, then apply blood In less than 5 seconds. Ruined strip, meter not ready. My best procedure is to prepare the lancet in the lancing device, open the vial, remove a test strip, insert the test strip in the meter and make sure it activated the meter (i.e. fully inserted, and correct face facing up), lance the finger, verify the meter didn’t detect a fault with a dry strip, verify the blood droplet conforms to requirements of good surface tension and volume (nice rounded droplet with some vertical height, not smeared or watery, and of sufficient size - at least 1.0 -1.5 mm in diameter), then apply the channel to the blood spot.
        5) If I get a nice, plump blood droplet at least 1.0 mm in diameter, and angle the strip so I don't block the fill channel by my skin when applying the blood, 100% of the time I get complete fill and a reading.
        6) If there is any residue of soap, hand lotion, grease, butter or other oil, dirt, powder, food residue, other contaminant, or visible wetness on my finger when I lance it, I usually will not get a nice plump droplet, but instead get an irregularly shaped spot of blood, or a smeared or diffuse droplet. Applying the test strip to this type of blood spot usually results in a partial fill, and an invalid test. Initially, until I became fanatic about washing, rinsing, and especially drying my finger prior to lancing, I wasted 15-20% of my strips.
        7) Too little blood on the surface of the finger also results in a partial fill, and invalid test. I have thick skinned fingers. I use either the 6 or 7 depth setting on the Onetouch Lancing device, and often will see a very tiny speck or no blood, even after a few seconds. Attempting to express blood from the puncture by pinching or “milking” the finger will usually get the needed droplet size. However, this needs to be done expediently, since the meter times out (around 1.5 to 2 minutes after strip is inserted). If the meter is just timing out as the blood is applied, no reading is made, and the strip is ruined.
        8) If the meter is warm and the test strip came from a colder storage vial, the reading is often way out of expectations. Meter and strip need to be about the same temperature, and neither too hot (over 85 deg F or so), or too cold (less than 50 deg F). Much too hot, and the meter tells you it cannot be used.
I assume the same thing happens if the meter is too cold, but I have not been testing during the winter months yet.
        9) I alternate hands for testing from one week to the next. I use different fingers on subsequent tests, and lance sides, near the middle of the of the finger pad, and different distances from the end of the finger on the 1st joint. When retesting, I usually used a different finger. Alternating hands and using different sides and face of the finger means I find it convenient to fill from either side of the strip. This is a nice feature for me.
